About us

NARESA is one of the pioneers on PMTCT in Kenya. In 1999, during ICASA - Abidjan, NARESA hosted a meeting that brought together USAID, UNICEF, UNAIDS, public health practitioners and academics to explore how existing knowledge on PMTCT could be packaged for integration into existing maternal services in resource constrained settings. Out of this was born the 12 country UNICEF supported PMTCT pilot from 2000 - 2001.

In Kenya NARESA partnered with UNICEF and Horizons Project of the Population Council to undertake the Kenya PMTCT project. UNICEF provided commodities to support PMTCT, Horizons provided financial resources to carry out operational research while NARESA was the implementing partner providing clinical support and supervision for PMTCT at 3 sites initially (Karatina and Homa Bay Diastrict Hospital and Kenyatta National Hospital) and later expanded to Busia District Hospital and Kakamega Provincial Hospital support.

The lessons learned have informed the PMTCT scale up in Kenya. Specific outputs from project were: a PMTCT curriculum, IEC materials including a training video, site assessment tools, support supervision guidelines, a PMTCT M&E system, and PMTCT training teams.
